Saturday
The early bird gets the worm! The yard sale folks are out at daybreak, the Farmer's Markets start about 7:30 or 8. There's the one downtown, at the corner of Stewart Parkway, Gladden, and Main Streets, the other one off 15th Street across from the SECU, just west of Wal-Mart and hwy17, and the man on the side of the road at 3rd Street and hwy17. We didn't make it out last Saturday until about 10, and though we found plenty of wonderful food, the selection was smaller than it had been earlier. There were lots of empty boxes. Maybe we'll do better this week. Outdoor tomatoes are ready as are various squashes, green beans, red potatoes, silver queen corn, peppers, and cucumbers. Blueberries, peaches, plums and canteloupe are ready too. The horseradish man downtown, though out of horseradish, had some daikon and other exotic veggies. He had to build a birthday present for his granddaughter this week, but he has promised to grind more next week, the first week of July. This is the ingredient that makes the difference in cocktail sauce! (Ketchup, lemon juice, horseradish.) Shrimp are in season!
