Directions to Washington, NC

  • By Boat:

65 nautical miles west of Ocracoke inlet, up the Pamlico river, almost to the Tar river is downtown Washington.  Go under the RR bridge and you’re here. The bridge tender can only be reached by phone, if you don’t fit under, call 252-975-1017 to have it opened. No amount of horn blowing will work, and there is no radio contact. If you have no phone you can reach the dockmaster at VHF 16 Monday-Friday, 8-5. The city docks have no fuel, but they have a pump out station, showers, and full hook ups.

  • By Car:

Hwy 264 turns into fifth Street and John Small Avenue when you reach the city limits.  Hwy 17, the one with traffic lights, intersects hwy 264 smack in the middle of Washington.  15th Street is accessed by turning north at the first traffic light when you get to town, from either direction.

  • By Private Plane:

252-946-3900  is the phone number for Warren Field, located west of North Market Street extension, just north of the sports center, where it changes from one lane to two lanes.  If you're on Hwy 17, it's the left turn at the tractor place.

  • By Bus:

Carolina Trailways - 800-231-2222 will drop you off at the Washington Motel, 1011 Carolina Avenue.  That's on Hwy 17 north of 264 aka fifth street.  You can also arrange to ship and receive packages.   The nearest commercial airline is USAir out of Greenville.  That's PGV, not Greenville-Spartanburg.  Jets fly from Norfolk, VA or Raleigh, NC.  It takes about thirty minutes longer to get to Norfolk, and parking is more expensive than Raleigh, but decide based on where you're going.   The train is in Rocky Mount, but check the schedule before you decide it's a good idea to ride the train.  It depends on where you're going.  We have freight service here, pay attention at RR crossings.
